SMALL THINGS EXHIBITION

SHOW DATES

Deadline for Submission: December 16, 2023, midnight PST
January 10, 2024, thru February 3, 2024

CURATORS – KEN RONNEY & ERIC RENARD

Ken Ronney Sculptor and art group administrator

Ken is past president and exhibit chair of the California Art League, and past Vice-President and exhibit chair of the San Fernando Valley Arts and Cultural Center.  In these organizations and positions, he has participated in entering, administrating, curating, and/or judging over 60 competitive art exhibits. He has also served as the sole Juror for Pasadena Society of Artists competitive exhibits.

Ken took up sculpting after taking an early retirement from his engineering career. Starting a new phase in his life, he took a hands-on sculpture class where he was formally introduced to working on moderately large pieces of stone.  It was magic.  After completing several static free-form stone sculptures, he decided to experiment combining mechanical engineering and design skills with stone, metal, plastic, and wood to create unique moving stone sculptures.

He took off in this direction in 2009 with a complex multi-piece, motorized stone, and metal kinetic work.   This style has become his passion. His works have won multiple prizes in local club and gallery exhibits including the annual California Sculptors Symposium Exhibit.

Eric M Renard (www.ericrenardphotography.com) is one of California’s Leading contemporary Fine Art Photographers. Recent exhibitions have explored the modern world through black & white photography, though he is equally well-known for his distinctive color work reflecting classic California images. Eric’s photography has found its way into art galleries in London, Budapest, New York, Texas, Oregon, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut and across California. His photography has received numerous Best of Show awards and has been published in both books and photography magazines, including the cover of Black & White magazine. He is also on the board of directors for several non-profit art organizations/galleries in Los Angeles, helping to organize and promote other local artists.

THEME

The theme for this exhibition is "Small Things" but this doesn’t mean your work needs to be about small things. We are looking for artwork that focuses on the details. Vincent Van Gogh said “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” Show us your “Café Terrace at Night” masterpiece for this very special show.

ELIGIBILITY

The California Art League exhibit is open to all CAL and non-CAL entrants who wish to share their best work. CAL members’ dues must be current for 2023. New members join CAL as part of the entry process. The reduced membership rate for new members is exclusively for artists who have never been a member of CAL. Artwork will be curated using digital images, (jpegs), through Online Juried Shows https://www.OnlineJuriedShows.com/Default.aspx?OJSID=58620

ARTWORK SUBMISSION CRITERIA AND CONTENT

CAL is dedicated to exhibiting excellent works of fine art which promote the artist’s artistic ability, vision, and creativity. In this respect, all artwork should be original and created from conception to completion by the artist within the last three years, and not previously shown in any CAL show. Artists are permitted to use their own photos as reference materials in the creation of their artwork, but not photos from other sources. No artwork copied from other artists work, copyrighted work, published photos, the Internet, AI Generated, or created under the direct guidance of an instructor are eligible.  The only exception is collage work which may include small portions of other artist’s work.

ARTWORK MEDIA, ENTRIES and FEES

Artwork submissions can be in any of the following media: drawing, painting, photographs, digital art, mixed media, collage, and sculpture.  READY-HANG-ARTWORK (PAINTINGS, PHOTOS, ETC.) SHALL NOT BE MORE THAN 18” WIDE, INCLUDING THE FRAME. Weight of any hanging piece may not exceed 20 pounds. Sculptures on a pedestal must have a footprint less than 2’ x 2’ and be under 6’ high. Sculptures on the ground are limited to a 3’x3’ footprint. Please ask if you are unsure about the size limitations. No performance art or AI is accepted.

Entries will be made via jpeg images online to OJS. Artwork submissions are limited to five original artworks per artist. Entries may be made in more than one medium

Fees are:  One or two entries: $35.00 for CAL members with 2023 dues fully paid, and $55.00 for non-CAL members. The $20.00 surcharge for non-members is a one-time offer that gives the new artist membership into CAL at a discount, which is good for 2023 and 2024. All entrants may enter additional artwork for $5.00 per piece fee up to a total of 5 entries. Payment is made through OJS via credit card or PayPal. Fees are non-refundable. There is no guarantee of acceptance into the show. New members whose work is juried into this show will be considered “exhibiting members” and will be eligible to submit work as an exhibiting member for acceptance in all future CAL shows.

FORMAT FOR DIGITAL IMAGES (jpegs) AND HOW TO SEND THEM

All entries must be submitted in digital JPEG format. Photograph your art with a digital camera on a black background, (if cropping is not possible), without a mat or frame, and not through glass. Image quality is critical! Poor photography and presentation will affect acceptance by the curators. The digital image must represent the painting or artwork. Directions for submitting work to OJS is clearly described on their website in several topics listed on the sidebar of the main page: ttps://www.onlinejuriedshows.com//HowtoEnter.aspx.
