THEME - ILLUMINATED
The dictionary gives us several meaning for il·lu·mi·nated
(1) to supply or brighten with light
(2) to make luminous or shining
(3) to make illustrious or resplendent
(4) to decorate (something, such as a manuscript) with gold or silver or brilliant colors or with often elaborate designs or miniature pictures
But I think this is my favorite: Finding Meaning and Self-Expression Through Light and Shadows. This is a very inclusive and thought-provoking theme which should allow you flexibility to show us your most creative work!
ENTRY LIMITED TO HAND DELIVERED ARTWORK TO SASSE MUSEUM OF ART
We will accept (approximately) 85-100 pieces into the exhibit. For this exhibit, CAL has decided to limit accepted artwork to pieces the artist can hand-deliver on the take-in day and pick up at the end of the exhibit. No mail or delivery service packages will be accepted for this show.
JUROR – GENE SASSE
With over 50 years immersed in the realm of creativity, Sasse emerges as a notable figure. As a seasoned professional photographer, book producer, adjunct professor, and museum founder, he offers a distinctive perspective on the world of art and creativity. His extensive experience serves as a lens through which to explore the multifaceted dimensions of artistic expression and innovation.
ELIGIBILITY
California Art League exhibitions are open to all current members plus new members may join as part of the entry process. This reduced membership rate for new members is exclusively for artists who have never been a member of CAL. Artwork will be curated using digital images, (jpegs), through Online Juried Shows.
ARTWORK SUBMISSION CRITERIA AND CONTENT
CAL is dedicated to exhibiting excellent works of fine art which promote the artist’s artistic ability, vision, and creativity. In this respect, all artwork should be original and created from conception to completion by the artist within the last three years, and not previously shown in any CAL show. Artists are permitted to use their own photos as reference materials in the creation of their artwork, but not photos from other sources. No artwork copied from other artists work, copyrighted work, published photos, the Internet, AI Generated, or created under the direct guidance of an instructor are eligible. The only exception is collage work which may include small portions of other artist’s work.
ARTWORK MEDIA, ENTRIES and FEES
Artwork submissions can be in any of the following media: drawing, painting, photographs, digital art, mixed media, collage, and sculpture. No performance art or AI is accepted. All artwork must be ready to hang.
Entries will be made via jpeg images online to OJS. Artwork submissions are limited to five original artworks per artist. Entries may be made in more than one medium.
Fees are: One or two entries: $35.00 for CAL members with 2024 dues fully paid, and $55.00 for non-CAL members. The $20.00 surcharge for non-members is a one-time offer that gives the new artist membership into CAL at a discount. All entrants may enter additional artwork for $5.00 per piece fee up to a total of 5 entries. Payment is made through OJS via credit card or PayPal. Fees are non-refundable. There is no guarantee of acceptance into the show. New members whose work is juried into this show will be considered “exhibiting members” and will be eligible to submit work as an exhibiting member for acceptance in all future CAL shows.
FORMAT FOR DIGITAL IMAGES (jpegs) AND HOW TO SEND THEM
All entries must be submitted in JPEG format and cropped to remove extraneous background and frame. If cropping is not possible, photograph on a black background, without a mat or frame, and not through glass. Image quality is critical! Poor photography and presentation will affect acceptance by the curators. The digital image must represent the painting or artwork. If you wish to emphasize a particular detail of one part of an entry, enter it as a 3D piece. Then you can submit 2 photos of the piece...one overall and another showing off that detail. ACCEPTANCE INTO EXHIBIT AND SELECTION OF AWARDS
Acceptance of artwork and designation of awards for this exhibit will be made by the Juror based exclusively upon the digital images submitted to OJS during entry.
NOTIFICATION
All artists submitting work will be notified of acceptance by email by June 17, 2024.
DROP-OFF / TAKE-IN
This will be a live gallery exhibit. The take in will be on Sunday June 30, 2024, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. Accepted artwork must be hand delivered to Sasse Museum of Art - 300 South Thomas Street Pomona, CA 91766. Hanging will take place immediately after the take in.
OPENING RECEPTION AND AWARDS PRESENTATION
The opening reception will be on Sunday July 14, 2024 from 2-4 pm. The exhibit will also be online on the CAL web site www.californiaartleague.org. All entered artwork must remain available on exhibit and for sale until the end of the exhibit.
CLOSING RECEPTION / PICK-UP
The closing reception will be on August 31, 2024, 1 – 4 p.m. Take-down begins at 3 pm. All artwork must be removed during this time. Please make other arrangements if you cannot do it in person.
REPRODUCTION OF ARTWORK IMAGES
Any artwork entered in this show may be reproduced for CAL’s or Sasse’s advertising, marketing, and promotional purposes without consent of or notification to the artist or the artist’s agent.
RELEASE OF LIABILITY
By entering the exhibit through OJS, the Artist acknowledges that CAL will take all reasonable care to safeguard their images and Artist accepts that CAL, its agents, associates, directors, officers, volunteers will not be responsible for any damage, injury, liability, loss, or theft, should any occur. Insurance for digital representations of art entered in this show is each individual Artist’s responsibility. By entering, Artist agrees to all terms described in this contract.
SALES, SALES TAX, COMMISSIONS, SHIPPING, and INSURANCE
All sales will be handled directly between the buyer and the artists. Sales tax will be the responsibility of artist and the buyer. All shipping arrangements will be made by the artist. If shipping is required, the method of shipping and insurance will be by mutual agreement between the artist and buyer. The artist will handle all shipping details. If a piece is sold, the artist must notify Sasse so a red dot signifying “sold” can be placed on the artwork’s wall label. The artist shall also notify CAL so “SOLD” can be placed by the on-line image’s identified price.
