CAL NEWSLETTER, January 2026

President’s Letter

Happy New Year!

Thank you for being a part of the CAL tribe! We keep striving to present opportunities to showcase your great work in contemporary locations of a higher level of visibility and curated by known local art critics and artists. As a CAL Team, we appreciate you and want to keep our sights set on doing our best for you.

Last year, we packed in a bit more shows than usual!

We added TAG gallery, which as a group member, availed us one big show, and opportunities for several group shows during the year where one or two members' work may be shown. (These group shows are voted upon by the board from submissions responding to our calls that go out, usually monthly.)

We had a cool show at the hip Gallery 612 in Santa Monica, and finished off with the bG Gallery in Bergamont Station. It was a stand-out year for CAL. Some works sold, a couple artists were asked to show their work beyond the CAL shows, and one member was invited to be featured; not naming names, but for a group, this is not bad!

We have retained our membership in TAG again this year, as well, so this will keep us on our feet. Shayna Nys Dambrot will once again be our judge for the upcoming show, and (SHHH!... a reveal: Our Theme will be "Shadows"). The exhibit will be in March, and the prospectus will be published very soon on Online Juried Shows, so watch for that!

We are currently in search of a second gallery setting this year as well. We are always actively investigating new and contemporary gallery options and welcome suggestions from our members. Please let us know if there are places you'd like us to consider for a CAL exhibition and we'll seriously consider them. Thank you.

This year, CAL will be expanding upon our well attended Art Shares, which will include a presentation upon a given topic relevant to our membership.

For those who are new to this, the Art Share is a forum where artists share their art in a group setting, which fosters connection and inspiration. We will be sending out a poll to members who can check off what special topics they would like to see/ hear/ engage in, which will be part of the Art Share series.

For instance, possible topics that could be presented may be: Marketing/ What/ How,  Approaching Galleries, Professional Artist Studio Visits, Art Dealer Talk by a well seasoned art dealer, Art Critiques by a well-known, seasoned artist, etc. The poll will also include "Other", which will be something you may write in that is different from the suggestions provided.

We plan on having about four art shares per year. It's new, so bear with us. We may have a given topic be so encompassing that it could be a stand-alone event, but still is under the umbrella of the Art Share concept: Sharing our Art, Sharing Ideas, Sharing Information. This, curated by your most pressing requests that you really want to learn in the local art scene.

Over time, CAL has evolved from a more traditional group of artwork into a more contemporary art-leaning group. We are highly eclectic, ranging from contemporary traditional art, sculpture, and photography, to the abstract, all done in a highly diverse collective of mediums. It's hard to address "one size fits all", but somehow at our exhibitions, they are cohesive at least by theme.

What is also in common, is that we create high quality artworks that resonate in concept and/or emotion. What is unique about us is that our group of artists come from a myriad of backgrounds and work in all types of media, which, as president emeritus Ken Ronney always points out, "Makes for some very interesting shows."

Thank you; it's been a real pleasure being president and a part of this group of highly talented artists. I've been touched by your stories, profoundly. It's been a real privilege.

All the Best,

Nora Koerber
